3D model of Venice – attempt to save the city for future generations

Researchers from the Organization on Research and Recreation of the World’s Cultural Heritage Factum Foundation started to work on 3D models of Venice according to The Art Newspaper. The enthusiasts made plenty of photos of one of the most famous cities of Venice Lagune – Saint Georgio Majore in high resolution. The size of this archive is 1 terabyte. The researchers used LiDAR scanner to recognize 3d objects.

The scientists are concerned because of the water level in Venice, which is constantly growing. By 2100 the level of water in Venice will be 30-60 centimeters higher, even if the level of air pollution improves. Higher levels of water in Venice will cause destruction of buildings.

In November 2019 the famous Biennale held in Venice was closed beforehand because of the biggest flood for the last 50 years. The level of water grew 187 centimeters, 85% of the city territory was flooded and 2 people died.

Several years ago National Geographic created a 3D model of Notre Dame.
