No cruise ships in Venice this summer

Venice Italy cruise 2020

August 13, 2020

Cruise ships will not be making a stop this summer in the port of Venice, Italy. Before COVID19 outbreak Venice was one of major tourist attractions. Almost 32 000 tourists were visiting Venice daily.

MSC Grandiosa, the new cruise ship will not make a stop in Venice. Same route has been approved by other cruise companies.

Costa Cruises will be following the route from Trieste to Greece, then Genoa to Malta. No stops in Venice are currently foreseen this summer.

15th of August has been declared by the government of Italy as the restarting date for cruises. The operators are required to follow only the European routes. Also, only travelers from the EU approved list will be allowed. (Source The Local)

Several months ago Venice was looking for a solution to reduce the number of tourists or to better control it. They even introduced an entrance fee – $11. This amount was due for one day travellers arriving in Venice. This measure was meant to help solve the problem of overtourism in Venice.

Another measure to make the city less crowded was a ban for the largest cruise ships to dock in the port of Venice. Instead they could arrive outside the city.
